Sustainability
Environment
In conformity with our ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certifications, we guarantee the ultimate care for the environment and sustainability practices.
As a company that works with clients in the Oil, Gas, and energy sector - GZ adopts a sustainability approach that revolves around two fundamental pillars:
- The work we do impacts and affects the lives of local communities.
- The companies we work with have an ethical responsibility, to work in a way that does not cause any harm or imbalance to the natural environment.
We, therefore, as a company, first and foremost adhere to Iraq’s Law No. 27 of 2009, known as the Environmental Law. The law sets forth broad requirements relating to the prevention of pollution and the management of hazardous waste.
As GZ, we expect our partners to strictly abide by the following requirements - regarding the exploration and extraction activities of petroleum and natural gas:
- To take the necessary measures to limit the dangers and risks resulting from petroleum operations.
- To apply effective practices to protect the earth, air, water, and underground reservoirs from pollution and destruction.
- To take the necessary precautions to dispose of produced saltwater through safe environmental methods.
- To prevent spills of oil and refrain from injecting oil into subsurface areas that are used for human and agricultural purposes.
- To provide the environmental authorities with information about the causes of any fires, explosions, breakdowns, accidents, and leakage of crude oil and gas from wells and pipelines.
We are committed to driving the adoption of sustainable and environmentally-sound oil and gas operations with our partners - to prevent environmental damage and possible harm to livelihoods.

GZ’s Approach to Effective Climate Change Policy
A transparent and practical approach to tackle issues of Greenhouse Gas Emissions involves the government, who defines policy goals - but allows industry players to develop solutions that are effective and innovative. This is what effective policy making looks like to us.
Climate Change Policy Goals must:
- Build partnerships among key stakeholders underpinned by trust and transparency.
- Facilitate tangible and meaningful GHG emission reductions.
- Align economic, environmental and energy security needs.
- Advance innovation and actionable solutions.

Decommissioning and Reclamation
We encourage site closure that is safe and follows safety protocols once a well has reached its end of life.
Site closure begins with a review of a site’s operational history; identifying and addressing potentially hazardous substances and waste material, and reclaiming disturbed land, so it again becomes sustainable.
Site Assessment, Biodiversity and Conservation
Wildlife and the natural habitat, around any location, should always be protected. This is why we encourage the implementation of a rigorous site assessment program that incorporates land and water resource protection.
Identification
Identify areas with high biodiversity and conservation value, during site planning and development.
Assessment
Host assessment sessions to determine the accuracy and practicality of development plans, and also recommend mitigation strategies.
Management
The goal here is to avoid any negative impact on the wildlife that can result from business operations. This is done by developing avoidance activities that are tailored to the environmental factors of each specific site.
Mitigation
Happens when avoidance is not possible.
Alternative solutions to minimize disturbance through site specific planning must be sought. This can include decreasing activities during specific times in the year, or moving activities further away from areas most likely to be negatively affected.

Waste Management
Waste materials, created by companies as a result of their daily operations, must be carefully managed and disposed of.
Effective waste management helps reduce environmental degradation. For businesses in our industry, we recommend the following waste management program for efficient waste management:
- Data collection and reporting
- Proper handling, proper storage, and handling of waste
- Tracking for re-use or disposal
- Identifying recycling opportunities
- Maintaining regulatory requirements
